Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often thought of as a children’s disorder identified by fidgety, unfocused children or a child who often appears “checked out”. While many people are able to be diagnosed as children a significant number of people are not diagnosed during childhood. There are many people who have Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder who are able to skate through school without being noticed. If this is the case, you may have noticed that as you progressed with schooling or work your struggles increased. You may notice you are overlooking details or errors that you know you should catch. You may often find yourself zoning out when listening to a teacher, boss or friend. Maybe you notice you are constantly forgetting things or losing items, or starting projects but never finishing them. If this sounds familiar you may have Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.


What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is broken down into two different ways Attention-Deficit Disorder and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

What are ADHD Symptoms?

  • Difficulty remaining focused, often losing their attention to minor distractions (for teens and adults this could mean becoming distracted by their own thoughts).
  • Struggle to follow through and fail to complete their responsibilities
  • Difficulty with organizing
  • Avoid things that take long periods of time and focus

Children and Adult ADD and ADHD can look different due to age, sex and how the individual is wired. So, symptoms may look different. Signs of ADD and ADHD may not be obvious to you because you are used to a certain way of being but often it is obvious to family members, friends, teachers, and coworkers. Commonly, ADHD and ADD disorder can often coincide with depression, anxiety and parents wonder if their child also as Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). This is a serious disorder that can cause havoc on your future goals if one doesn’t seek treatment.

People who have Attention-Deficit with Hyperactivity Disorder have the symptoms listed above for Attention-Deficit Disorder in addition to the following symptoms:

  • Often fidget taps or squirm in their seat, walking or standing at inappropriate times ( this in a consistent state of restlessness)
  • Always “on the go,” bouncing from activity to event, may be hard for others to keep up with
  • Often talk excessively, blurting out the ends to other people’s sentences, struggle to wait their turn in conversations.
  • Often has difficulty waiting for their turn or in a line.
  • Intrudes on others, borrow things without asking, join an activity or conversation uninvited, take over someone else’s activity.
