Different Anger Disorders
Anger Disorders describe pathologically aggressive, violent, or self-destructive behaviors symptomatic of and driven by an underlying and chronically repressed anger or rage. Anger disorders result primarily from the long-term mismanagement of anger, a process in which normal, existential anger grows insidiously over time into resentment, bitterness, hatred, and destructive rage. Anger disorders may also be caused or exacerbated by neurological impairment and substance abuse, both of which can inhibit one’s ability to resist aggressive, angry, or violent impulses.
Intermittent explosive disorder (IED): is an impulse-control disorder characterized by sudden episodes of unwarranted anger. The disorder is typified by hostility, impulsivity, and recurrent aggressive outbursts.
What does Anger Management treatment look like?
Treatment involves talk therapy which will include education of coping skills for anger and the necessary tools to bring an overall reduction in anger episodes. In Addition, other treatments such as EMDR that can help with trauma-induced anger, meaning that perhaps a parent growing up was abusive towards you, and this behavior was modeled to you.
In addition, we will teach you ways to control your anger and stress using techniques such as breathing exercises, cognitive restructuring, problem-solving, improving communication strategies, relaxation techniques, and interpersonal skills.
