What is ART?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy is an evidence-based form of psychotherapy that utilizes back and forth eye movement to help clients address common problems such as depression, anxiety, addiction, grief phobias and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Though it is similar to EMDR in that it uses hand and eye movement, it is not the same. EMDR changes the effects of traumatic memories through cognition while ART utilizes imagery.
How does it work?
ART erases negative images and replaces them with a positive scenario so that your traumatic experience or negative image no longer triggers a physiological response which is often the anxious, “fight or flight” feeling we experience. It doesn’t change the facts of the memory, just the way in which we experience it.
Why the hand and eye movement?
The hand and eye movements provide bi-lateral brain stimulation which allows us to use both sides of our brain. It also calms our nervous system and assists in processing information more efficiently. A common misconception is that it is a form of hypnosis. You will be speaking to me just as you would during a regular session. You are also fully conscious and aware of what is happening throughout the process.
How long does it take?
Research shows that ART provides quick and effective results, in as little as one session. Imagine going into a house and opening all of the doors and cupboards at one time (this is often how it feels when we enter into “talk therapy” and try to understand ourselves and what contributes to our problem). This process can feel overwhelming and even re-traumatizing at times. ART allows you to go in the house and open one closet at a time to address that specific memory and then close the door on it and move forward with your life.
ART is effective for both adults and children. It only requires that the client be able to move their eyes, hold onto a thought and be motivated to get better!
Meet with our ART Therapist support and assist clients to connect with their authentic self and learn to love, not hate, themselves. Also, behaviors will be evaluated that are not currently working for them. We utilize multiple therapy modalities based on the client’s personality and problem. The therapy modalities are all research-based and are showing success based on the particular problems and the client.
